Sometimes your manuscript needs a little more than a proofread. You don’t quite want a full edit, but you just know it could benefit from a little extra attention. This is where a good copyeditor comes in.
Copyediting is the step in the editorial process that comes just before proofreading. It includes the proofreading tasks but doesn’t go as far as true editing. Copyediting looks at flow, tone, and clarity, and includes fact-checking.
Copyediting includes:
- A pre-edit chat.
- A complete and thorough copy edit.
- Fix spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, punctuation, and grammar.
- Check for formatting issues.
- Note any inconsistencies within the text.
- Note any possibly offensive language.
- Either fix and/or make note of any incorrect word choices or word usage.
- Restructure sentences for clarity.
- Check for consistency in tone, language, and tense.
- If a style sheet is not provided, I will create one that outlines decisions made about treatment of words and any other areas of interest, including character, timeline, and location lists in fiction novels. A style sheet helps with consistency now and in the future.
- Post-edit support that includes a chat via Zoom or email to answer any of your specific questions and the ability to email me for up to six months with simple editorial questions.
- An editorial report detailing any observations I made. This report can include the answer to any questions the author has.
Still unsure?
Good news! I provide of free sample. All you have to do is send me 1,500 words, and I will perform a copyedit. This gives you the chance to get a feel for how I work. It’s a test drive before you buy.
I also offer a service where I copyedit your first 10,000 words. This can be helpful if you are getting ready to send out samples of your manuscript. This will include everything that is included with a full copyedit.
What is the cost?
Prices for copyediting start at $0.015/word. Additional fees may apply for a quick turnaround or complex work. A final quote will be given when I return your free 1,500 word sample.
You can compare my fees against industry standards at www.the-efa.org/rates/
Fees include two passes of your manuscript plus one round of revisions after you have looked over my work.
I’m happy to work with your budget. We can figure out a package that fits your needs and budget.
